SUMMARY:2026 Spotlight Series - Reverie in Tonalism
DESCRIPTION:2026 Spotlight SeriesReverie in Tonalism\nTracey Maras & Harry Starr On display July 11\, 2026 through October 3\, 2026 \nOpening Reception July 11\, 2026\, 3:00  – 5:00 pm \nPoetic\, tranquil\, restful\, harmonious\, peaceful\, reverie\, dreamlike\, enchanting\, mysterious\, romantic\, and a sense of metamorphosis. All words to describe Tonalism. \nTonalism is a uniquely American art movement. A movement characterized by harmonious colors\, introspective moods\, and a romantic appreciation for nature. Tonalism originated as the cousin to Europe’s Impressionism\, but in a more subdued and reverent mood. It has become the cornerstone of American landscape painting. \nHarry Starr and Tracey Maras embrace the aesthetics of Tonalism in their work. \nStarr creates a sense of metamorphosis in each of his photographs. Whether landscape or still life\, his pieces evoke mystery\, enchantment\, and elegance. \nMaras conveys an atmosphere of serenity and peaceful tranquility in her pastel paintings. Regardless of subject matter\, there is a connectedness to nature. \nStarr and Maras may utilize different mediums of artistic expression. However\, their work shares a respect and reverence for nature. Themes that weave themselves throughout Tonalism.

SUMMARY:Forgotten: North St. Louis Homes One Year Later by Sandy Haynes
DESCRIPTION:On display from September 23\, 2026\, through October 17\, 2026 \nThis exhibit is free and open to the public. \nIn May 2025\, a devastating tornado tore through North St. Louis\, damaging homes\, neighborhoods\, and landmarks across the city. In the days that followed\, Heartland Art Club founding member Sandy Haynes began documenting what remained—not with a camera alone\, but through paint. \nForgotten: North St. Louis Homes One Year Later brings together approximately fourteen works from Haynes’ ongoing series inspired by the tornado and its aftermath. Her paintings depict damaged and partially destroyed homes with an artist’s sensitivity to architecture\, place\, light\, and memory. Buildings that might otherwise be seen only as evidence of destruction become portraits of the lives and communities they once sheltered. \nA longtime painter and educator\, Haynes has spent decades creating portraits\, landscapes\, florals\, and architectural subjects. In this deeply personal body of work\, she turns her attention to a city changed by disaster\, preserving a visual record of places that may eventually be repaired\, transformed\, or lost altogether. \nThe exhibition follows recent recognition of Haynes and the series in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and offers visitors an opportunity to experience this important body of work together at Heartland Art Club.
