Members Showcase 2021
August 27 – October 2 at the Galleries at Heartland Art Club
Strolling Reception
This year’s showcase features a special “strolling reception”! Rather than one night and one big party, we invite you to come and stroll through the gallery at your leisure, throughout the duration of the exhibit. We will be handing out goodie bags to guests, with refreshing drinks, individually wrapped cookies, and a packet of flower seeds, while supplies last! Come on by any time during regular gallery hours beginning Friday, August 27 to see this year’s gorgeous artwork and snag your goodie bag before they’re gone!
Awards
A special thank you to Jane Mudd, our judge for this year’s Members Showcase, and to our sponsors for each award! A few words from Jane about the show:
“This was a very tough exhibit to judge! I spent a long time with the work but kept coming back to the ones I ended up selecting. They seemed to reflect all or most of what I look for as a judge: Understanding of the medium, Knowledge of design, Drawing skill, Invention, Element of surprise in either idea, execution, or sense of paradox.”
Congratulations to Our Award Winners!
First Place, $300, Sponsored by Molly O’Brien Homes
“The Aftermath”, Watercolor, by Erin Blumer
Jane says: “Reflects excellent knowledge of the watercolor medium, colors and textures are rich and add to the depth. Cropped image makes for a strong design. Subject matter is edgy but I kept coming back to the “alive-ness” of this old master Dutch inspired still life. Very detailed yet has lots of unexpected surprises.”
Second Place, $200, Sponsored by Grafica Fine Art & Framing
“Sitting on a Couch in Paint Rock”, Oil, by Lon Brauer
Jane says: “Impressive variety of brush strokes and carefully placed accents of color. Painting is both mysterious and immediate. Both calm and active. Other nice contrasts – thick/think paint, interior description all angles yet figure is “actively stationary”. Well drawn.”
Third Place, $100, Sponsored by Mary Drastal Fine Art
“Meandering”, Pastel, by Tracey Maras
Jane says: “Consistent handling of the pastels throughout the whole composition. Overall shimmering effect created by layering and dragging the pastel across the final layer is stunning. Peaceful, yet active “meandering” space – nice contrast.”
1st Honorable Mention, $25 Art Mart Gift Card, Sponsored by Art Mart
“Winter Solitude,” Oil, by Sandy Haynes
Jane says: “Layering of oil painting and active surface contrasts with calm, simple feel of the painting. Nice subtle textures of orange and blue. Depth in design but also in the careful layering.”
2nd Honorable Mention, $25 Art Mart Gift Card, Sponsored by Art Mart
“Petroglyphs Kokopelli,” Quill pen and ink, by Gary Gackstatter
Jane says: “Mesmerizing in its minute detail. Eye moves slowly across the texture surface, stopping at slight changes and delighting in the careful handling of the pen and quill. Primitive subject contrasts with sophisticated rendering.”
3rd Honorable Mention, $25 Art Mart Gift Card, Sponsored by Heartland Art Club
“Windstorm, Weldon Springs Trail Head,” Photography, by Beth Goyer
Jane says: “Everything in the this photo seems to direct the eye to the sharp-edged leaves in the central tree. Soft transitions all around lend to the mystery and the unpredictability of nature. Subtle blue hue seems to add to a sense of hopefulness.”
