The versatility of soft pastels is unlimited! Pastels can take us on whatever journey we choose. What if your journey is to paint more expressively? How do we make the leap?

During this 2-day workshop, you will learn how working on a textured surface paper or board can help you create a painting with dimension, texture, and drama. And while the highly textured surface encourages looser and more expressive mark-making, it also provides the impression of details without having to labor over them.

You will learn about a variety of mediums that can be used to create a textured surface/ground. You will learn how to incorporate an underpainting on the textured surface and create pastel paintings that are engaging and expressive.

About Tracey Maras

Tracey Maras is best known for her pastel paintings of the natural world around us and life interacting with it. Her paintings convey a sense of serenity and connectedness. Working with the pure pigment of pastels, her pieces convey subtle vibrancy that capture moments and sensations that instill a sense of peace.

Since 2000 Maras’ work has spanned many themes including wildlife, landscapes, and portraits. She consistently pushes the limits of the pastel medium, exploring new techniques in each work in her attempt to share moments of calm serenity. Maras actively teaches pastel techniques in workshops and classes throughout the Midwest and online, nationally and internationally.

She is a juried Associate Member of the Pastel Society of America, Signature Member of Heartland Art Club, and Associate Artist and Instructor for Unison Colour Pastels. Her blogs and articles are published through HAC, Unison, UArt Pastel Papers, the Pastel Journal, and the Pastel Association of New Zealand. Her paintings have been juried into shows by the International Association of Pastel Societies, the Pastel Society of America, Plein Air Magazine, the Pastel Journal, and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum.

Maras’ approach to painting with pastels mirrors her approach to life. She is a life-long learner with an endless enthusiasm to learn, to improve, and to share with others.
